Here’s my problem:
Here’s the headline: “Thousands including prime minister head to Terry Fox’s hometown for 25th run”
Who give’s a rat’s patootie that the Prime Minister participated in a Terry Fox run? Is it only valid if some Canadian or provincial member of government officially sanctifies it?
This is the 25th anniversary of a run that had absolutely diddly-squat to do with “government”, and is in fact a testimony to the un-aided individual pursuit for goodness of one brave, courageous Canadian, acting almost alone.
Today Terry Fox’s Run—his legacy—is a symbol of Canadian people—all of them acting alone and on their own volition—participating and making a huge difference. Government never did, nor does it now, have anything to do with it, ever, and nor should it. It’s simply not about that.
Yet the media is so enthralled—or maybe they just think Canadians are—with the notion that nothing is anything unless the government says so. That’s become the Canadian way.
The media story informed us of this landmark information:
“Martin said Fox is one of Canada’s most recognized heroes.”
Well thanks, Mr. Prime Minister. I did not know that. I had no clue.
My wife ran in the Terry Fox run as she always does—Paul Martin did NOT inspire her, I can tell you that. And after completing the run (she came in third place among all the women in the run!), she took a big fat check out of her running shorts and donated it to the cause. She didn’t even wait for the tax receipt (which I admittedly asked for afterwards, because that’s my mindset unfortunately).
We celebrated her success, just between us, took pictures of her in her Terry Fox shirt, and then went inside and had lunch. This was not a government affair. It was a Canadian affair. Terry Fox was a great Canadian, and neither Paul Martin nor his disciples in the media need to tell us that or to sanctify it for us.
