Ontario’s Liberals: “The people are saying blah blah blah again Mr. McGuinty!”

Never mind what the people want, part 3,274:

Protests held across Canada and Europe against Ontario adopting Shariah law

TORONTO (CP) – Protests are planned in cities across Canada and Europe to stop Ontario from adopting Shariah law to settle Muslim family disputes such as divorce.

The government is considering a report which recommends it include – and regulate – Shariah religious arbitration similar to existing Catholic and Jewish tribunals.

Premier Dalton McGuinty has said his Liberal government would ensure no women’s rights are trampled if Ontario decides to adopt Shariah law.

But the very idea has set off alarms among women’s groups, dissidents from hardline Islamic states and human-rights activists who came together to organize the protests.

Shiva Mahbobi said in a television interview that Shariah laws forced many women to flee countries like   Iran,    Afghanistan and Nigeria to seek refugee status in this country.

She calls Shariah law racist, and said Ontario would be helping hardline Islamic groups “legalize violence against women.”

Almost 100 organizations have banded together under the banner of the International Campaign against Shariah Court in Canada for today’s protests.

They’ll march in six European cities: London, Amsterdam, Paris, Stockholm, Dusseldorf, Germany and Goteborg, Sweden, as well as across Canada in Ottawa, Toronto, Waterloo, Ont., Montreal and Victoria.
