WOMEN STEP OUT OF THE SHADOWS
Ottawa Citizen Oct 11 04After registering and voting in unexpectedly large numbers in Saturday’s historic election, women took a lead role again yesterday when thousands of ballot boxes from Saturday’s presidential election were brought in for counting.
The Taliban and al-Qaeda had also warned Afghans—and especially women—they would face death if they voted or worked in polling stations or as ballot counters. The threats apparently dissuaded some women from voting in southeastern Afghanistan, but few women in Kabul seemed deterred.

Speaking in a high-pitched voice from behind the anonymity of a burqa, a woman who gave her name as Sadiqa, said: “Why should I feel fear? Why should I care? I never thought this day would come.
“I am very happy the Taliban are gone and we are free now. But I still wear my burqa because I am an Afghan and I prefer it. It is my choice.”
…another war widow and mother of eight, who is an army nurse, could not contain her enthusiasm.
“I am pleased more than you can imagine to see such crowds of women voting for a democratic government,” said Shanaz, who took her burqa off to reveal a fashionable burgundy dress when she entered the polling station. “We are so happy to see you foreigners and the Canadian troops and the other foreign troops here. Since you came here we see no guns in the street. There is security.”
