A column by columnist Lydia Lovric is posted in the guest writer subsection of our columnist section. It’s called Women choosing home over work.
Here’s a snippet:
Women today would rather take their cues from June Cleaver than Germaine Greer.
Feminist dogma has been rebuffed as young women find themselves embracing all things feminine. In fact, a recent survey for New Woman magazine finds women today yearn for the more traditional role of stay-at-home mom. It appears that the 1950s stereotype is no longer something to be ridiculed, but admired.
A happy marriage and domestic bliss is more important than an exciting or important career, according to the 1,500 women polled (who had an average age of 29).
More than two-thirds believe that the man should be the main provider in a family and 70% admitted that they do not want to work as hard as their mother’s generation.
Only 1% of the women questioned claim their career will remain a “top priority” even after they have kids.
New definition of success
These women know that a big paycheque and a corner office will not buy them happiness. Sacrificing a happy home life in order to climb the corporate ladder may result in a fancy title and a bigger briefcase, but not much else. Being a good mom and maintaining a healthy marriage is the new definition of success.
Ardent feminists will no doubt be shaking their heads, wondering where they went wrong.
