Honouring a remorseless extremist
…a significant number of Canadians were offended yesterday—and many were more than offended: They were ashamed and morally anguished at his invitation into the Order.
Given the determination to override Canadians’ clearly expressed will—92% of respondents to a recent Web-based poll opposed the honour going to Dr. Morgentaler—we must conclude that the committee, or those who prevailed over committee dissenters, believe it is their right to exploit the award as a validation of their own ideological bent rather than its intended purpose of recognizing those whose achievements will inspire others to like achievement.
Dr. Morgentaler was not rewarded for revitalizing cities, or entrepreneurial innovation, or combatting disease, or aesthetic originality, creative accomplishments we can all applaud as nation-building acts. He was rewarded for remorseless extremism in a morally dubious cause. …

• National Post lead editorial: “Besmirching the Order”.
(Note that the author, whom we are to take as being the Post’s editorial board but whom I actually presume to be opinion editor Jonathon Kay, is monstrously wrong on at least one count: He intones that “Opponents of abortion cast Henry Morgentaler as a monster. Proponents of abortion rights view him as a Saint. Both of these views are overly simplistic.” He is exactly wrong. While pro-abortion advocates are indeed simplistic and naive, it’s hardly “simplistic” to adopt the rather bold (in this liberal-ass politically-correct world) pro-life position that I have, and to then find that in contrast to my position, Morgentaler is indeed the very “monster” that Morgentaler himself claims the likes of me are. I came to my pro-life conclusions after many years of well-thought-out and rather complicated soul-searching, and indeed I came from the dark side. Morgentaler is exactly a monster in this thinker’s eyes, and reaching that conclusion was in no way a “simplistic” journey. Kay (or whomever the author was) obviously has absolutely no idea how un-simplistic it is to be on my side. Nor how elitist and simple, in the fullest sense of the words, it is to minimize and chastise those of us on the pro-life side, in that manner.)
• “A Symbol Of Moral Decay” – editorial by Ian Hunter in National Post.
• Globe and Mail endorses the decision today in their lead editorial. “A courageous honour for courage”
• The Toronto Star apparently finds it utterly irrelevant, doesn’t write any editorial about it, thus endorsing it as I see it.
