Forty years ago this month the long simmering politics of separatism in Quebec turned ugly and violent.

In a recent column for the Montreal Gazette, Bernard Amyot, past president of the Canadian Bar Association, reminded his readers it was the Quebec government of Premier Robert Bourassa, with the unanimous support of the three opposition leaders in the Quebec National Assembly, who asked for the Canadian army to assist Quebec police authorities in apprehending lawbreakers.
