News that the huge government of Canada’s politburo called the “Competition Bureau” was suing several of Canada’s wireless phone network companies got my goat for some reason, this morning.
Those companies are being attacked, maybe properly, I don’t know, by the government overseers for allegedly misleading consumers about the cost of premium texting services. I’m not even sure what that all means. I text under a plan that allows me to text. Maybe it’s just that I read the service agreement. Seems simple enough. Sometimes I think dumb people should be sued for being so dumb and slowing down the process of just getting on with it.
But anyway. If companies are being bad players, then they should be stopped. I’m perfectly fine with that.
HOWEVER: if the “Competition Bureau” is really worried about the state of competition in Canada, then why stop there? Here’s what I was wondering, as I tweeted in rapid-fire mode as if I were on conservative, common-sense steroids, as usual, this morning (note that in my first tweet, I misspelled “politbureau”, forgetting the correct Soviet-style spelling, in my haste):
- Canada’s competition politbureau suing Canada’s wireless co’s. How about suing state-owned CBC? http://is.gd/pegYDg
- Why doesn’t Canada’s “Competition Bureau” sue the state-owned CBC? And Canada Post.
- Why doesn’t Canada’s “Competition Bureau” sue state-owned Via Rail?
- Why doesn’t Canada’s “Competition Bureau” sue state-owned, state-run liquor monopolies?
- Why doesn’t Canada’s “Competition Bureau” sue GM (“of Canada”), and Chrysler (“of Canada”), post- gov bailout?
- Why doesn’t Canada’s “Competition Bureau” sue state-owned, state-run healthcare monopolies?
- Why doesn’t Canada’s “Competition Bureau” sue state-owned, state-run gambling monopolies?
- Why doesn’t Canada’s “Competition Bureau” sue state-owned, state-run car insurance monopolies?
- Why doesn’t Canada’s “Competition Bureau” sue Sirius Satellite Radio (“of Canada”), as owned by state-owned CBC
- Why doesn’t Canada’s “Competition Bureau” sue Purolator Couriers, as owned by state-owned Canada Post?
- Why doesn’t Canada’s “Competition Bureau” sue the Canadian and all provincial govs for being in any business?
- Why doesn’t Canada’s “Competition Bureau” sue all the crony co’s which took state loans, grants, tax subsidies?
I could go on with more such questions. I’m sure you get the point. I’m pretty sure the government doesn’t. I’m damn sure progressives including all the liberals and the socialists in the NDP and in all the other parties including the so-called Conservative Party, don’t.
