Poll says Liberals Party’s corruption ranks atop list of Canadian concerns

You’d think, judging by the liberal media, that the Liberal Party corruption gripping our nation is way down the totem pole in terms of importance to Canadians compared to, say, the urgent need for gay marriage, legalizing pot-smoking, legalizing prostitution, Soviet-style state-run child care (and “early learning”!), Kyoto, being Anti George Bush, Halliburton, subsidies for every cotton-picking thing, and of course the importance of appointing still more liberals to more patronage posts in order to dominate every facet of Canadian life.

But no.  And with a little more leadership in terms of pointing out to Canadians what things might also be really important aside those things we’re told are important by those liberal elites of Canada, and expressing it poetically, we’d find our real concerns are rather different than the liberals in government, media, and academia think.

I’ll quote the highlights starting in mid-story, because I found this poll to be an interesting departure from the usual push-polling that liberal-friendly polling firms constantly run.

[…]  Pollsters usually prompt people they question, giving them various options to respond to, but in this survey, GPC simply asked respondents to name issues that would affect how they will vote in the next election—expected next spring.

Usually, polls ask the likes of:

Question:  Which of the Liberal government’s successes has appealed to you the most so far, even before they actually really get going:
(A) Canada leads the world
(B) Shutting those Conservatives up
(C) Christians finally being shut up
(D) Every Canadian now fully depends on liberal-left government
(E) All of the above.

OK you get the point.  Note the different outcome though this time.

Integrity rivals health care as voters’ issue

Parliament resumes today with a new national poll suggesting that government corruption now ranks with health care as the No. 1 concern among Canadian voters.

According to Ottawa-based GPC Research, only twice in the past five years has any other issue come close to health care as a priority for Canadians: Anxiety over terrorism after the terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington on Sept. 11, 2001, and public anger over corruption in the Liberal ranks during the height of the Gomery inquiry earlier this year.

[…] Health care and integrity were far out in front at 16 per cent each, with taxes at nine per cent, followed by the economy, education, social services and national unity.

And for once they interviewed a university professor (they can almost always be counted on to provide liberal-left-friendly quotes because academia is replete with liberal-lefties and outright Marxists), but I actually agreed with this one:

[University of Toronto political scientist Nelson Wiseman says] “The Liberals are building up policy arrows in their quiver to crowd Gomery off the front pages,” said Mr. Wiseman. “When Gomery was at full tilt, the issue of corruption and integrity sky rocketed among voters and when the reports are issued it will explode again. The Liberals will try to change the news agenda because they have no cards left to play on integrity.”
