Today, surrounding a huge Liberal Party logo, liberalvision CTV.ca once again raises the problem of the liberal party and its dismal fund raising efforts, in what I think is yet another transparent effort to help the Liberal Party raise cash so they can beat the dreaded Conservatives in the next election. This is not the first time. They did an almost identical story back on June 11, which I also blogged about. Here’s today’s:
(Note that it’s in their “CANADA” section—not “POLITICS”)
They only left out the Liberal Party address and
phone number for your donation needs.
The June 11 story featured a picture of Stephane Dion instead of the Liberal Party logo.
Apparently liberalvision’s fund raising drive didn’t go over so well, so they need to do it again even though there’s no news here.
This time, they seem to have secured the latent help of the liberals’ Globe and Mail. I say latent, because they inform Canadians that “The Globe and Mail reported on Tuesday that the Conservatives raised 10 times as much money from 10 times as many donors than the Liberals in the first financial quarter of this year.” Well I reported that myself back on June 11 in my blog entry. When reviewing the original story on CTV.ca, I saw fit to have a look at the first quarter fund raising results from Elections Canada. I included all the numbers and said things like: “The Conservatives raised nearly 10 times the amount raised by the Liberals. $5,176,736.30 just in the first quarter of this year.”
I imagine CTV.ca will run another story in a couple weeks after the Toronto Star has a well-timed look at those exact same fund raising results and reports to Canadians that “the Conservatives raised ten times as much as the Liberals in the first quarter”.
That will be fund raising effort #3.

This intriguing article in the National Post:
Dion’s largest creditor
BY JULIET O’NEILL
CanWest News ServiceOTTAWA • Nine days after the Liberals were defeated last year and Paul Martin announced he was stepping aside as party leader, Stéphane Dion had a $200,000 loan from Montreal constituent Mamdouh Stefanos in the bag.
“I volunteered,” says Mr. Stefanos. “I told him, ‘Whatever you need, you can have it from me.’ ”
Mr. Dion would borrow another $150,000 from him for his leadership campaign, making Mr. Stefanos the biggest of eight lenders to what was then a longshot candidate to replace Mr. Martin.
His $350,000 was half of the total $705,000 in loans that Mr. Dion arranged to augment the $953,396 he raised in donations from individuals for a campaign that ended up costing him nearly $1.7-million.
Most of Mr. Dion’s other lenders, including such high-profile businessmen as Stephen Bronfman of Montreal, Rod Bryden of Ottawa and Marc de la Bruyere of Edmonton, are well-known in Liberal circles and to the local public.
[…]
Examples of his [Mr. Stefanos’] investments range from the 2005 purchase and sale within a year of Quebec’s largest eyewear chain, Farhat Lunetterie, and current investments in Montreal’s award winning Green Cafe.
He has incorporated numbered companies that he says will emerge soon with names and products, one company supplying biometric cards and another commercializing a patent on an environmentally friendly engine.
Mr. Stefanos said his conversations with Mr. Dion have revolved around his excitement over commercializing environment-related patents, rather than politics.…
And that will be the last you ever hear of this. Unless I bring it up again.
