…And coming from a committed separatist, that’s really saying something.
Scott Reid’s comments, which were later backed-up and endorsed by John Duffy, another Liberal Party strategist, are forcing even the liberal media to, you know, report it.
And you gotta know the Liberals are feeling the heat, because they’re bringing up that old warhorse, the Conservatives’ “Hidden Agenda™” bugaboo —this time on gay marriage. It’s a case of psychological projection. But Harper’s stand on gay marriage has got to be the most unhidden agenda in Canadian history, so it’s kind of funny too.
And this Liberal diversion attack is also a little politically stupid. According to an Ipsos-Reid Poll, more Canadians actually think the LIBERALS have a hidden agenda than do the Conservatives. But you see, Paul Martin gets his political advice and direction from his strategists. Yes, that’s them hiding over there in the corner. Scott Reid and John Duffy. That explains that.
But back to the leader of the party we used to think of as the most anti-Canadian:
“It is profoundly contemptuous,” he replied when asked by reporters. “I don’t agree with Harper’s proposal, but to say such a thing … it reminds me of Jean Chretien’s declarations on unemployment. He said people in the Gaspe, all they want is their cheque to go buy beer. I remember that. When I say that Paul Martin’s party is the same as Jean Chretien’s, here are the same contemptuous attitudes.”
Well then.
Meanwhile, Conservative MP Rona Ambrose said Mr. Reid’s remarks are “offensive” and serve to highlight the fundamental difference between the Liberals and Tories on child care.
“Every day, Canadians are putting their children first. They are making sacrifices for them. But the Liberals don’t trust people with their own money. They don’t trust Canadians to make the best decision for their children.”
And I’ll take the opportunity to reprint some of my favorite lines from Rona Ambrose, made in the House:
“Parents, and not the federal government, are in the best position to determine which type of child care best suits their children.”
…and the most famous quote of all:
“We fought long and hard for the right to vote, for the right to participate in universities and the work force, and the right to make our own choices. We don’t need old white guys telling us what to do.”
But Mr. Harper has also said:
“It’s hard enough to be a parent, but governments should support your choices, not limit them,” he said. “In fact, the only people who should be making these choices are parents, not politicians, not the government.”
